Net Zero Won’t Save the Tropics Soon

New research shows that even if the world reaches net zero greenhouse gas emissions, the poorest people in tropical regions will be among the last to benefit. The study highlights a deep inequality in the climate crisis. Scientists found that the unequal impact on the world’s poorest people would not be reversed, even if the implicit goal of the 2015 Paris agreement is achieved. Temperatures in tropical areas have risen more sharply compared to their historic range than in higher latitudes. This includes wealthier countries in Europe and North America. The findings suggest that while cutting emissions is essential, it may not bring quick relief to those who suffer most from rising heat.
