EU’s China choice: rebalance trade or turn protectionist

Pascal Lamy, former Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), warns that Europe faces a critical decision on China: rebalance trade relations or slide into protectionism. Lamy led the WTO from 2005 to 2013. Before that, he spent decades in French government and European Union roles, including chief of staff to European Commission President Jacques Delors (1985–1994) and European Trade Commissioner (1999–2004). He says Europe must address its trade tensions with China and its own weak growth potential. He also calls for a stronger WTO.
