Chinese President Xi Jinping has publicly endorsed Hong Kong's top official, Chief Executive John Lee, during a high-level meeting in Beijing. Xi stated that Lee's work over the past two years has been "fully affirmed" by China's central leadership.
However, the praise was coupled with a strong directive. President Xi emphasized that safeguarding China's national sovereignty and security must be the "highest principle" for Hong Kong. He instructed Lee and his government to be "absolutely loyal" to this duty.
The meeting underscores Beijing's continued focus on stability in Hong Kong. Since major protests in 2019, Chinese authorities have prioritized national security in the semi-autonomous region. New security laws have been implemented to, as officials state, prevent subversion.
President Xi also urged Hong Kong officials to improve governance and accelerate economic development. He called for efforts to resolve "prominent issues" affecting people's daily lives to strengthen public confidence.
Chief Executive Lee pledged to guide Hong Kong to "scale new heights" under Xi's instructions. He committed to ensuring the city's prosperity and stability.
