Yemen: Drone Downed as Fighting Escalates Near Key Shipping Lane

Government forces in southwestern Yemen say they have downed an explosive-laden drone and struck Houthi positions, as violence flares near one of the world's busiest sea routes. The drone was brought down in Al-Dhalea province, according to government forces. The same forces reported airstrikes in Taiz province. Both areas lie close to the Bab el-Mandeb strait, a narrow waterway between Yemen and East Africa. Roughly one-tenth of global trade passes through this strait, making it a vital route for international shipping. The Houthis, who control large parts of northern Yemen, have not commented on the claims. Neither side's account could be independently verified. The fighting adds to concerns about security along the Red Sea corridor, where attacks on ships have already disrupted global trade in recent months.
