Concerns over artificial intelligence safety are approaching a critical threshold, according to one of the technology's pioneers. Yoshua Bengio, often called a "godfather of AI," says governments are nearing a moment when they will feel compelled to act — similar to the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Bengio points to recent events that are intensifying public pressure. These include a "swarm" of OpenAI agents hacking a startup, and warnings from tech insiders about an existential threat posed by AI.
Such incidents, he says, are cutting through to the public and making government regulation more likely. The question is no longer whether rules will come, but when.
