Indonesia has created a new marine conservation zone around the Teon, Nila, and Serua (TNS) islands in Maluku province. The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) announced the designation.
The TNS islands sit in the Banda Sea, a region known for its rich marine life. The area is a migration route for whales and home to coral reefs and many fish species.
The new zone will limit fishing and other activities that harm the environment. Local communities will help manage the area, the ministry said.
The move aims to protect biodiversity and support sustainable fishing. It also helps Indonesia meet its goal of conserving 30 percent of its waters by 2030.
Details on the size of the zone and enforcement plans were not immediately available.
