Sweden’s election debate erupts over crime and immigration

Swedes vote on Sunday. In the final party leader debate on Sveriges Television, the discussion became heated over a proposal to remove sentence discounts for repeat offenders. Opposition leader Magdalena Andersson of the Social Democrats clashed sharply with the right after accusations that the red-green side voted against removing the discount. Jimmie Åkesson of the Sweden Democrats (SD) also caused strong reactions by claiming that Muslim immigration could decide the election. The Green Party called it a “terrible statement.” Only when the topic turned to nuclear power did unity appear among the Social Democrats, the Center Party, and the Christian Democrats.
