U.S. Lawmakers Demand Secret Venezuela Strike Footage

The leader of the U.S. Senate is demanding the military release unedited video of recent strikes in Venezuela. He warns that keeping the details secret is "unacceptable." Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, a Democrat, made the demand. He is targeting two top officials: Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro and Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall. The demand follows U.S. military action last week. Officials said the operation targeted illegal drug trafficking facilities in Venezuela. The Venezuelan government condemned the strikes as a violation of its airspace. "'Tomorrow, Secretaries Del Toro and Kendall owe senators some pretty big answers,' Schumer said. He said they must explain 'what is happening in the Caribbean.'" Schumer and other senators want the complete, raw video from the operation. They argue that the public and Congress have a right to see the full facts. The secrecy, they say, prevents proper oversight of U.S. military actions. The Pentagon has so far released only brief, edited clips of the strikes. A full briefing for senators is scheduled for Tuesday.
