Former US President Donald Trump says he has asked Chinese leader Xi Jinping to release imprisoned Hong Kong media mogul Jimmy Lai. Trump told reporters he feels "so badly" about Lai's conviction on national security charges. He stated he personally raised the issue with Xi. "I spoke to President Xi about it, and I asked to consider his release," Trump said on Monday. He did not specify when the conversation took place. Jimmy Lai, a pro-democracy publisher, was found guilty under Hong Kong's national security law. The law was enacted by Beijing in 2020.
