A Brown University graduate student is confronting a painful pattern of gun violence. She has now survived three mass shootings, two of them on university campuses.
The latest was at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS) on Sunday. Police arrested a suspect, but released him the next day due to insufficient evidence. The district attorney's office stated there is not currently enough evidence to file charges.
For the Brown student, the quick release compounded the trauma. She was previously present during shootings at Michigan State University in 2023 and at her high school in Oxford, Michigan, in 2021.
In an interview, she described a feeling of disbelief. "It's the same cycle," she said. The experience, she explained, erodes a sense of safety and justice.
The Colorado Springs police investigation remains active. They have not identified the released suspect. The shooting left two people dead and injured a third.
The student's story highlights the lasting impact of gun violence on survivors, especially when legal outcomes feel unresolved. She is now calling for greater accountability in the judicial process.
