Turkey Ranks 2nd in World for Protected Local Products
Turkey holds more registered geographical indications than almost any other country. Official data shows it is second globally, behind only China. A geographical indication (GI) is a label for products from a specific region, known for qualities linked to that area. Examples include Champagne from France or, in Turkey, Antep baklava and Aydın figs. The Turkish Patent and Trademark Office (TURKPATENT) leads the national GI effort. Its goal is to transform these registered items into powerful global brands. This branding strategy has three clear aims: to increase export revenue, to attract more tourism and to raise incomes for local producers. By marketing these unique products, officials plan to strengthen Turkey's economic and cultural presence worldwide.
