The United Nations has welcomed Belarus's release of more than 120 foreign citizens from its prisons.
A UN spokesperson stated the move could create an opening for improved relations. "We hope that this latest step enables greater dialogue, including on the issue of human rights," the spokesperson said.
The mass release involves prisoners from countries including Russia, Ukraine, and those in Central Asia. Details of their crimes or sentences were not provided.
Belarus has faced international criticism for its human rights record. The UN indicated this action might be a chance for new talks on that subject.
