Researchers are urging governments to take immediate action to support oil-dependent nations like Nigeria and Algeria, warning that the global transition away from fossil fuels could otherwise spark conflict, mass migration, and severe economic collapse. The warning comes from a new study, which finds that countries heavily reliant on oil revenues for public services are highly vulnerable. Nigeria, Iran, Angola, and Algeria are named as being at greatest risk. These nations lack economic diversification and do not have enough financial reserves to cushion the shock of declining oil income. Without urgent international assistance, the study argues, the shift to clean energy—while necessary—will destabilize entire regions. Governments in these countries may struggle to fund basic services, leading to social unrest and forcing millions to flee.
