Australia to Tighten Gun Laws After Rampage Leaves Six Dead

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has pledged to strengthen national gun control laws. This follows a deadly stabbing attack at a Sydney shopping center that killed six people. The attacker, identified by police as 40-year-old Joel Cauchi, was shot and killed by a police officer at the scene. Five women and one man died. Several others, including a baby, were injured. Police believe the attack was not terrorism. They stated Cauchi had a history of mental health issues and targeted women specifically. In the wake of the tragedy, PM Albanese vowed to pursue "national, uniform" gun law reforms with state leaders. The focus will be closing loopholes to prevent individuals with a history of violence or mental illness from accessing firearms. The lone suspect, a 40-year-old man, is currently in a coma under police guard. Authorities stated on Monday they expect to file criminal charges against him.
