New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani has called a recent Hanukkah attack in Australia "vile antisemitic terror." However, he did not address a controversial slogan used by some of his supporters.
The phrase "globalize the intifada" is heard at some pro-Palestinian rallies. "Intifada" is an Arabic word for "uprising." It refers to past periods of violent conflict between Palestinians and Israel.
Mamdani strongly condemned the Sydney attack. A man stabbed several people at a rabbi's home on December 23. The mayor-elect called it an act of hate.
He has not changed his position on the slogan. In the past, Mamdani has said the phrase is a call for "global solidarity" and not violence. Many Jewish groups say it promotes hatred against Jews.
The mayor-elect's silence comes as city leaders prepare for his January inauguration.
