More than 10% of Nepal’s total energy generation capacity was knocked offline by last week’s devastating floods, exposing the country’s heavy reliance on a single, vulnerable power source.
The outage occurred after rising waters damaged key hydropower stations along major rivers. Nepal has built its modern economy around hydropower, which supplies nearly all of its electricity. However, the floods turned the nation’s primary asset into its biggest weakness, leaving engineers scrambling to restore service to millions of homes and businesses.
Hydropower works by using fast-moving river water to spin turbines that generate electricity. This makes it clean and renewable, but it also ties the entire national grid to weather patterns and river levels. When extreme rainfall overwhelms dams and channels, the same water that usually powers the country becomes a destructive force that shuts the system down.
Officials have not yet provided a timeline for full repairs. The immediate priority is restoring power to hospitals, water treatment plants, and communication networks. But the broader problem remains: as climate change brings more intense storms, Nepal’s single-source energy strategy leaves its entire infrastructure exposed to a single weather event.
Experts argue that the country must diversify its energy mix—adding solar, wind, or thermal backup—to prevent future disasters from triggering national blackouts. For now, the floodwaters have receded, but the question of how to harden Nepal’s power grid against the next storm is just beginning.
