A violent attack at a busy shopping center in Sydney, Australia, has left at least 15 people dead. Officials say 42 others were injured, including two police officers.
The incident occurred on Saturday at the Westfield Bondi Junction mall, near the famous Bondi Beach. Police confirmed a single attacker acted alone.
A senior police officer at the scene confronted and shot the attacker. This action is believed to have stopped further violence. The attacker, a 40-year-old man, later died from his injuries.
New South Wales Police Commissioner Karen Webb stated the officer’s actions were "nothing short of heroic." She said the officer likely saved many lives.
The motive for the attack is not yet known. Authorities have said they do not believe it is terrorism-related. The investigation is ongoing.
Many shoppers and workers were trapped inside the mall during the incident. Emergency services treated the wounded at the scene. The area remains closed as police continue their work.
