Syria has formally established a Syrian-British Business Council. The move aims to strengthen economic relations with the United Kingdom.
Syria’s Minister of Economy and Industry, Nidal al-Shaar, announced the council's formation. A government decision on Monday appointed Monzer Nazha as its Chairman.
Mohammed Heikal and Samar Shamsi Pasha will also serve as senior members.
The council's creation comes despite comprehensive UK sanctions on Syria. These sanctions, in place for years, severely restrict most trade and financial dealings.
