Fans Stole Our Underwear: The Wild Story Behind Roxette's Hit

Roxette's Per Gessle has revealed the extreme fan mania the Swedish duo faced at their peak. This included 2,000 people singing outside their Buenos Aires hotel all night. "We had 2,000 people outside our hotel room in Buenos Aires singing our songs all night," Gessle said. "David Coulthard later told me that all the Formula One drivers were staying there and were annoyed because they couldn’t sleep." Fans even stole personal items. "Fans stole my underwear – and even my car aerial," he added. Gessle said he formed Roxette after his first major band, Gyllene Tider, ended. That breakup left him depressed for two years. Roxette started as a part-time project when singer Marie Fredriksson was not doing solo work. Gessle said he felt intense pressure to make the band a success, just to keep Fredriksson involved. That drive helped create global hits like "It Must Have Been Love."
