**JAKARTA** – President Prabowo Subianto is pushing for deeper financial ties with Russia, aiming to channel new investment into Indonesia’s flagship development programs.
Speaking on Wednesday, Prabowo highlighted the role of two key funding vehicles: Indonesia’s sovereign wealth fund, Danantara, and a newly proposed Russia-Indonesia investment fund. He urged both nations to strengthen cooperation through these channels to accelerate infrastructure and strategic projects.
Danantara, Indonesia’s state-run investment body, is designed to manage state assets and attract foreign capital. The proposed joint fund with Russia would function as a dedicated pool of money for bilateral ventures, reducing reliance on traditional Western financing.
The President’s remarks signal a pragmatic shift toward diversifying funding sources, particularly as Indonesia seeks billions of dollars for its ambitious economic agenda. No specific project amounts or timelines were disclosed during the meeting.
The move comes amid shifting global financial alliances, where emerging economies are increasingly exploring non-dollar and cross-bloc partnerships. For Russia, the fund offers access to Southeast Asia’s largest economy; for Indonesia, it provides an alternative capital stream beyond the IMF and World Bank frameworks.
Analysts note that while the partnership is promising, execution will depend on regulatory clarity and risk management, especially given ongoing international sanctions on Russian financial entities. However, Prabowo’s direct endorsement suggests the initiative is a top priority for his administration.
