The Philippines says Chinese forces injured three of its fishermen during a confrontation in the South China Sea.
The incident occurred near Sabina Shoal, an area claimed by both nations. Manila reports that its fishing boats were targeted with water cannons and aggressive maneuvers by the Chinese Coast Guard.
According to the Philippine statement, approximately 20 boats were involved. The "dangerous blocking maneuvers" and water cannon attacks resulted in three fishermen being hurt.
China claims sovereignty over most of the South China Sea. The Philippines, along with several other nations, disputes these claims. Such skirmishes near disputed reefs and shoals have increased tensions in the region.
The Philippine government condemned the actions as a violation of international law. It stated the maneuvers were a threat to the safety and livelihood of its citizens.
