Cyborg Cockroaches Get an AI Upgrade

Scientists have taken another step toward making “cyborg” cockroaches a practical tool for search-and-rescue missions. The insects, fitted with electronic backpacks, can now navigate toward specific sounds using artificial intelligence (AI).
The new system allows human controllers to guide the roaches to a target, such as a person trapped under rubble. Previous versions of the technology could only steer the insects in a general direction. The latest upgrade uses AI to help the roach identify and walk toward a particular sound source, like a human voice, even in noisy environments.
“We are giving the insect a smarter way to listen,” said the lead researcher. “The AI filters out background noise and tells the roach which direction to move.”
The researchers attach a small chip and microphone to the roach’s back. The chip processes sound in real time and sends signals to the insect’s antennae, which act as steering controls. The roach does the walking, while the AI does the navigating.
This approach is not meant to replace robots. Instead, scientists say cyborg insects are useful because they are small, cheap, and can squeeze into tight spaces where wheeled machines fail. The roaches are also hardy and can survive in harsh conditions.
The team tested the system in a laboratory with obstacles and background noise. The roaches successfully moved toward a human voice from several meters away. The next step, according to the researchers, is to test the technology outdoors in more realistic disaster scenarios.
While the idea of a remote-controlled insect may sound like science fiction, the team stresses that the roaches are not harmed. “They live normal lives between missions,” one researcher explained. “We are just borrowing their legs for a short time.”
