Indonesia Revokes 22 Forestry Permits After Deadly Floods
Indonesia will cancel 22 forestry permits across the country. The decision follows devastating floods and landslides that killed over 1,000 people this month. The disaster struck parts of Sumatra, an island in northwestern Indonesia. Environmental experts say loss of forest cover was a key factor in the flash floods and mudslides. Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya Bakar announced the move on Monday. The permits to be revoked cover more than one million hectares of land. The government has not yet named the companies affected. Officials indicated the revoked permits involve land where operations have not begun or where rules were broken.
