Indonesia’s Rice Revolution: New High-Yield Seeds to Go Nationwide

Indonesia’s Agriculture Minister, Andi Amran Sulaiman, announced that the country will distribute high-yield rice seeds across all provinces. The seeds, developed by the Indonesian Center for Rice Research, are designed to boost national food production. Speaking on Wednesday, Sulaiman said the move aims to secure rice supplies and reduce reliance on imports. The new seeds produce more grain per hectare than traditional varieties, offering farmers a practical way to increase output without expanding farmland. The minister added that the program will start with major rice-growing regions before reaching every district. Local agricultural offices will train farmers on proper planting and maintenance to maximize results. This nationwide expansion comes as Indonesia seeks to strengthen food security amid global supply uncertainties. The government has not yet released specific yield figures, but officials expect a significant jump in harvest volumes within the next planting season.
