Turkish Cypriot Politician: Shipwreck Near Kyrenia Is Not an Isolated Incident

A Turkish Cypriot politician has said the recent shipwreck off the coast of Kyrenia reflects deeper problems in northern Cyprus, including failures in population management, oversight, and public administration. The comments came from Akansoy, a lawmaker from the Republican Turkish Party (CTP). He argued that the incident should not be seen as a one-off accident but as a symptom of systemic issues within the territory’s institutions. According to Akansoy, the crash highlights weak regulatory control and a lack of merit-based appointments in key public roles. He also pointed to broader concerns over how the population is managed in the breakaway state, which is only recognized by Turkey.
