More than 100 hydropower workers are feared trapped in tunnels after a flash flood hit the Himalayas, according to Nepal’s prime minister’s office.
Rescue teams have rappelled down into one tunnel to search for survivors. They called out but received no response, the office said in a statement.
The flood struck the site of a hydropower project, sending a surge of water into the tunnels where the workers were stationed. The exact number of people inside remains unclear, officials said.
Emergency crews are continuing their search, focusing on the tunnels where the workers were last reported. No official confirmation of casualties has been released.
