A devastating flood in Nepal was caused by a rare “compound event” combining a glacier failure with a massive landslide, according to a leading glaciologist. Joseph Shea, an Associate Professor at the University of Northern BC, said the disaster should not be viewed as a single trigger but as two simultaneous geological failures. Shea explained that warming temperatures are rapidly transforming high-mountain environments across the Himalayas. As ice melts and slopes destabilize, scientists must now watch for subtle warning signs that could precede similar cascading hazards. These events, while uncommon, carry the potential for catastrophic destruction and may become more frequent as climate change accelerates.
