Philippine Health Officials Urge Masks as Toxic Haze Blankets Region

Philippine health authorities are advising residents to wear face masks as a thick haze continues to shroud parts of the country. The advisory comes in response to deteriorating air quality, which officials attribute to seasonal burning and industrial emissions. The Department of Health (DOH) issued the recommendation on Tuesday, specifically targeting vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory conditions. Officials warn that prolonged exposure to the polluted air may cause coughing, throat irritation, and difficulty breathing. Local government units have been instructed to distribute masks in high-risk areas and to monitor air quality readings in real time. Schools in heavily affected zones have been advised to limit outdoor activities, while commuters are urged to keep windows closed and use public transport where possible. Health Secretary Maria Rosario Vergeire stated that the haze is expected to persist for several days, depending on wind patterns. She stressed that wearing a standard surgical mask or an N95 respirator offers adequate protection against fine particulate matter. The DOH also cautioned against relying on makeshift cloth coverings, which offer limited filtration. Citizens are encouraged to stay indoors during peak haze hours, typically in the early morning and late afternoon, when pollution levels are highest. No formal state of emergency has been declared, but health officials remain on alert. They are coordinating with environmental agencies to address the root causes of the seasonal haze and to provide timely updates to the public.
