The United States has strongly condemned a drone attack on a United Nations base in Sudan. The strike killed six peacekeepers from Bangladesh and injured several others.
A senior US official stated that the warring parties in Sudan's ongoing conflict "must not target UN personnel." The official also called for an immediate end to fighting and for all sides to allow "unhindered humanitarian access" to civilians.
The attack highlights the extreme dangers faced by aid workers and peacekeepers in Sudan. The year-long civil war has created one of the world's worst humanitarian crises.
UN peacekeepers, often called "blue helmets," are deployed to protect civilians and maintain ceasefires. International law strictly prohibits attacks on them.
