Glacial Collapse Kills 165, Thousands Missing in Nepal-Tibet Floods

A massive glacial collapse triggered catastrophic flash floods along the Himalayan border of Nepal and Tibet, killing at least 165 people, with officials warning the death toll will rise. More than 1,000 people remain missing, according to local authorities. In Nepal, 826 people are unaccounted for, including 579 foreign tourists from two dozen countries such as India, the US, Australia, Britain, and Canada. Chinese state media reported 558 missing in Tibet’s Gyirong county. Officials have not confirmed whether the two counts overlap. The US Geological Survey said the disaster began when a large glacier suddenly broke apart, sending a torrent of water and debris into populated valleys. The exact cause of the collapse is still under investigation. Rescue teams are working in difficult terrain, but access remains limited. The full scale of the tragedy is not yet known, as many affected areas are remote and cut off.
