Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has asked China to take a stronger role in ending Russia’s war against Ukraine. He made the request on Wednesday, pointing to a recent message of congratulations from Chinese President Xi Jinping on Ukraine’s national day.
“We count on further cooperation and on China playing a strong diplomatic role in bringing Russia’s war against our country to an end,” Zelensky wrote on social media. “Peace can be our shared achievement.”
The Ukrainian leader’s statement signals a push to bring Beijing into peace efforts. China has close economic and political ties with Russia, but has not condemned the invasion. Zelensky’s reference to Xi’s congratulations appears aimed at encouraging China to use its influence for mediation.
No immediate response from Chinese officials was reported.
