Norwegian Government Services Worsen After Cyberattack

Norwegian government digital services are facing renewed problems after an overnight cyberattack, according to the country’s Digitalisation Directorate (Digdir). “Update 22.01: We are experiencing a worsening of the situation,” Digdir wrote in a brief statement on Monday evening. This came after several hours of relative stability, though some limitations and disruptions remained. The problems began at 3:38 AM on Monday. By Monday morning, Digdir confirmed the cause was a denial-of-service attack, which floods systems with traffic to make them unavailable. Officials initially said they were gaining control. Ten public services were affected, including ID-porten and MinID (used for digital identification), Altinn (the main portal for business and citizen forms), and eInnsyn (for public documents). While conditions improved during the morning, some services deteriorated again after 12:00 PM. Digdir has not yet said when full service will be restored.
