Dozens of mature olive trees have been cut down near the occupied East Jerusalem town of Mukhmas. Local Palestinian officials state the destruction was carried out by illegal Israeli settlers.
Officials report approximately 40 trees were destroyed. The olive tree is a major economic symbol in the region. Its harvest is a critical source of income for many Palestinian families.
Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem are considered illegal under international law. Settler violence against Palestinian agricultural property is a repeated issue.
