Global scientists are working in Hong Kong to rebuild a lost ecosystem—not by planting rows of new trees, but by carefully assembling a forest from scratch. Their goal is to restore biodiversity by recreating the natural, layered structure of a healthy forest.
The project brings together ecologists from around the world. Instead of focusing on single species, they study how trees, shrubs, and ground plants interact. The team mimics natural patterns, mixing species that support each other and attract local wildlife.
This method is known as “framework” restoration. First, they plant fast-growing native trees to create shade and structure. Under that canopy, they introduce slower-growing, rare species that need protection from harsh sun and wind. Over time, the forest becomes self-sustaining.
Hong Kong’s hills were once heavily logged and degraded. Today, most of the remaining greenery is fragmented and low in diversity. The new approach aims to reconnect these patches into a full, functioning woodland.
Early results show a sharp increase in insects, birds, and small mammals. The ecologists say the key is not just planting trees, but rebuilding the entire web of life that depends on them.
The project is still young, but it offers a model for other cities facing similar environmental damage. The team hopes that what works in Hong Kong can be adapted worldwide—one healthy forest at a time.
