Trump claims Strait of Hormuz is ‘new U.S. territory’ after Iran talks
US President Donald Trump posted a picture of the Strait of Hormuz on his Truth Social page on Sunday, with the words “New U.S. territory: Strait of Hormuz” written across it. The post came hours after Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian called for talks on Friday. In response, the heads of Iran’s three branches of government met at the presidential palace. The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow waterway between Iran and Oman. About one-fifth of the world’s oil passes through it, making it a key route for global energy supplies. Trump’s comment is not an official claim of sovereignty. It follows rising tensions between Washington and Tehran over shipping and nuclear issues. Iran has not yet issued a formal response to Trump’s post.
