Chinese AI Rivals Close Gap on US Tech—at Half the Price

Chinese artificial intelligence models are quickly catching up to their American counterparts, offering comparable performance at a fraction of the cost. The shift is drawing new users, especially businesses that want to run AI on their own servers rather than relying on cloud-based services from US tech giants. According to Luz Ding, a Bloomberg News technology reporter, the key advantage for Chinese developers is their open-weight approach. This allows companies to download and deploy the models locally, giving them more control over data and reducing long-term expenses. While US models still lead in raw capability, the gap is shrinking fast. Ding noted that for many everyday tasks, Chinese models now perform nearly as well—but at significantly lower prices. That combination is proving hard to ignore for cost-conscious firms. The trend does not mean US leadership is over, Ding added. But it does signal a more competitive global market, where price and flexibility are becoming just as important as cutting-edge performance.
