Archaeologists in Türkiye have discovered a rare fresco of Jesus Christ. It was found inside a tomb believed to be 1,700 years old. The discovery was made in Iznik, a historic Turkish town. Experts date the tomb to the 3rd century AD. During this time, Christianity was illegal and faced persecution across the Roman Empire. The artwork shows a young Jesus figure without a beard. His right hand is raised in a sign of blessing. In his left hand, he holds a holy book. Such early Christian art is extremely rare. Followers of the faith often worshipped in secret. Public images of Jesus from this period almost never survive. The fresco provides new evidence of early Christian life. It shows that Christian communities existed and created art in this region, even under Roman rule.
