Turkiye Builds Mongolia’s First Ammunition Factory

Mongolia is quietly expanding its defense industry, and its newest partner is Turkiye. The two nations have launched a new ammunition production facility, signaling a major shift in Ulaanbaatar’s military strategy. For decades, Mongolia relied almost entirely on Soviet-era equipment and Russian supplies. But that dependency is now changing. The new factory, built with Turkish technology and expertise, marks the first major step in diversifying its defense sector. The plant will produce small-caliber ammunition locally, reducing Mongolia’s need for foreign imports. More importantly, it opens the door for deeper military cooperation between the two countries. Turkiye, a NATO member, brings modern manufacturing capabilities and a track record of defense exports. Mongolia’s move is practical, not political. By building domestic production capacity, it secures a stable supply chain and gains leverage in future negotiations. For Turkiye, the deal strengthens its presence in Central and East Asia. Neither government has disclosed the factory’s full output capacity or its total investment value. But the message is clear: Mongolia is no longer a one-partner defense market.
