Zambia: Ex-Minister Shot Dead; Amnesty Calls for End to Crackdown

Amnesty International has demanded an investigation into the fatal shooting of a former Zambian minister, warning that a post-election crackdown on the opposition must stop immediately. The organisation confirmed that Mutotwe Kafwaya, a member of the opposition party and former cabinet minister, was shot and killed during a security operation in Kabulonga, Lusaka, on 14 August. At least three other opposition members were arrested in the same operation, according to Amnesty. "The authorities must investigate this fatal shooting fully and hold those responsible to account," said Tigere Chagutah, Amnesty International's Regional Director for East and Southern Africa. He added that the arrests and use of lethal force signal a dangerous escalation against political dissent.
