Russia launched a massive overnight attack on Kyiv and the surrounding region, firing scores of missiles and drones in an hours-long barrage that killed at least 16 people, Ukrainian officials said Thursday.
The assault targeted the capital area, with a food warehouse in the Kyiv region among the structures hit. A firefighter was seen at the scene as large black clouds of smoke rose from the burning building.
Emergency crews responded to multiple strikes across the region. The exact number of wounded was not immediately disclosed in the initial reports.
The attack marks one of the most intense bombardments of the capital in recent weeks, extending a pattern of Russian long-range strikes on Ukrainian cities.
