Australia First to Fully Block UN Detention Inspectors

For the first time in over 30 years of global inspections, a United Nations monitoring body has been completely blocked from accessing an entire region. The UN Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture (SPT) announced that Australia’s Northern Territory refused all cooperation. The SPT visits prisons and detention centers worldwide to prevent mistreatment. The inspectors had to suspend their mission. They were examining how Australia treats disadvantaged groups, including children and people with disabilities, in detention. The SPT stated this non-cooperation breaks Australia’s obligations under an international treaty. The group warns that conditions in the Northern Territory’s facilities may expose detainees to serious harm. Australian federal officials said they were disappointed by the territory’s decision. They stated they remain committed to the UN treaty system. The SPT’s findings will be sent confidentially to the Australian government.
