Honda May Export US-Made Trucks and SUVs Back to Japan

Honda is considering a surprising trade reversal. The Japanese automaker may soon export American-made vehicles back to its home market. The models under review are the Honda Ridgeline pickup truck and the Passport SUV. Both are built exclusively at the company’s factory in Lincoln, Alabama. This potential move responds to strong demand in Japan for larger vehicles. Japanese customers are increasingly interested in midsize SUVs and pickups, categories where local offerings are limited. Importing from the U.S. would allow Honda to quickly fill this market gap. It is a shift from the traditional model where Japan exports cars to America. A final decision has not been made. Honda stated it is still studying the feasibility and business case for the imports. If approved, these would be the first U.S.-built Honda vehicles sold in Japan. The move highlights the global nature of modern car manufacturing, where vehicles are built where it makes the most economic sense, regardless of the brand's home country.
