AU Reopens Khartoum Office: A Narrow Path to Peace in Sudan?

The African Union (AU) has taken a small but significant step toward helping end Sudan’s conflict. On Wednesday, the Chairman of Sudan’s Transitional Sovereign Council, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, met with the AU’s Special Representative for Sudan, Ambassador Mohamed Belaiche, in Khartoum. The meeting focused on the political and security situation, AU-led mediation efforts, and the reopening of the AU Liaison Office in the capital. This return marks the AU’s first official presence in Khartoum after a period of absence. The reopening offers a narrow, but real, opportunity for the AU to help achieve a ceasefire. By re-establishing a physical foothold, the organisation can more directly engage with Sudanese leaders and push for dialogue. Analysts say the move alone will not end the war, but it provides a channel for renewed diplomacy. The question now is whether both sides will use this opening to move closer to peace.
