The rapid drawdown of the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) is approaching a critical threshold that could cause permanent structural damage to the underground caverns where the oil is stored, according to energy experts. The SPR, a network of salt caverns along the Gulf Coast, is the nation’s emergency stockpile of crude oil. It is designed to cushion supply shocks, such as hurricanes or international conflicts. However, the current reserve levels are now close to a point that raises serious operational concerns. The issue is physical. The caverns are created by injecting water into underground salt domes, which dissolves the salt to form a large void.
