North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has publicly stated that his soldiers were sent to clear landmines in Russia earlier this year. The rare admission confirms the direct, hazardous role North Korean troops are playing to support Russia’s war in Ukraine.
Kim made the statement in a speech reported by state media on Saturday. He said the troops were deployed to Russia’s Kursk region. This marks a unusual public acknowledgement of the dangerous tasks given to North Korean personnel in the conflict.
According to South Korean and Western intelligence agencies, Pyongyang has sent thousands of soldiers to fight for Moscow. In return, analysts say Russia is providing North Korea with crucial financial aid and military technology.
The deployment highlights the deepening military partnership between the two isolated nations as Russia continues its invasion of Ukraine.
