Russia’s New Jet Drones: 3,000 a Month to Overwhelm Ukraine’s Defenses

Moscow has halted production of its Geran-3 drones, shifting focus to faster, jet-powered models designed to overwhelm Ukraine’s air defenses, according to Ukraine’s military intelligence agency (HUR). The new drones are being built at a rate of 3,000 per month, HUR said. Unlike the slower propeller-driven Geran-3, the jet-powered versions fly at higher speeds, making them harder for Ukrainian interceptors to track and shoot down. The strategy, HUR explains, is to strain Ukraine’s air defense systems by sending large numbers of these drones into battle. The goal is to force Ukrainian forces to use expensive missiles and interceptor drones on cheaper targets, eventually depleting their resources. The shift marks a significant change in Russia’s drone production. The Geran-3, previously a key part of Moscow’s arsenal, is no longer being made. Instead, the focus is on quantity and speed. HUR did not specify what type of jet engine the new drones use, or how their range and payload compare to the Geran-3. However, the intelligence body’s statement suggests the move is a direct response to Ukraine’s growing success in shooting down slower drones. For Kyiv, the new threat means adapting quickly. Air defense units will need to adjust tactics to counter faster, more numerous targets. The coming months will show whether Ukraine’s interceptors can keep pace with Moscow’s new production line.
