Tanzania has launched a direct Chinese yuan (RMB) settlement service, allowing local businesses to pay for Chinese imports and receive payments for exports without converting through the US dollar.
The new system, announced by the Bank of Tanzania, aims to cut transaction costs and speed up trade between the two nations. Previously, Tanzanian traders had to convert shillings to dollars, then dollars to yuan, incurring extra fees and delays.
By settling directly in RMB, businesses can now bypass the intermediate currency. This move aligns with a growing global trend where several countries are diversifying away from dollar-dominated trade, particularly with China, which is Tanzania's largest trading partner.
The central bank stated that the service will also help stabilize foreign exchange reserves and reduce pressure on the Tanzanian shilling. Local banks have been instructed to offer the service, and the first direct transactions are expected within weeks.
While the service is voluntary, analysts suggest it could significantly boost bilateral trade volumes, which already exceed $6 billion annually. The initiative marks a practical step toward deepening economic ties between Dar es Salaam and Beijing.
