U.S. Accuses Rwanda of Pushing Region "Toward War" at UN
The United States has directly accused Rwanda of leading the region "toward war" at the United Nations. This comes amid intense fighting in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Washington's envoy stated Rwanda is supporting M23 rebels with weapons and soldiers. The rebel group recently entered the strategic city of Uvira. Regional officials report over 400 civilians have been killed in South Kivu province since the offensive escalated. Last week, the U.S. brokered a deal intended to end Rwanda's role in the conflict. However, the agreement has so far failed to stop the violence on the ground. Diplomatic anger is rising over the continuing crisis. The DRC and its allies accuse Rwanda of backing the rebels to control mineral-rich areas. Rwanda denies this, saying it is protecting itself from hostile armed groups.
