Warm rivers and falling water levels are pushing nuclear power plants across Europe to reduce their electricity output. The losses over a full year are small, but on critical days, the sudden drop in power can strain national grids and drive up energy prices. Nuclear reactors rely on river water for cooling. When the water gets too warm, or the flow too weak, plants must dial back production to stay within safety limits. This is not a new problem, but it is becoming more frequent as heatwaves intensify. The impact is rarely catastrophic. Over twelve months, the total energy lost is modest compared to what the reactors normally produce. The real trouble comes on specific days—usually during a summer heatwave, when air conditioners are running at full power. That is exactly when the grid needs the most electricity, and exactly when nuclear plants are least able to provide it. The result is a double squeeze. Supply drops just as demand peaks. Operators must then buy power from other sources, often at higher prices, or ask consumers to cut back. In extreme cases, grid operators have to import electricity from neighboring countries, which can push regional prices sharply upward. This pattern has repeated across France, Germany, and other European nations in recent summers. The issue is not a failure of the plants themselves, but a mismatch between the physics of cooling and the demands of a modern grid. As climate change brings hotter summers, the problem is expected to grow. For now, the losses remain manageable. But the trend is clear: Europe's nuclear fleet is becoming less reliable on the very days it is needed most.
