Iran’s Strait of Hormuz Demands Were Already Agreed in June, Says Report

Iran issued a list of demands on Saturday for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Some observers have called these “new” preconditions, but a closer look suggests otherwise. Reporting from Washington, FRANCE 24’s Fraser Jackson noted that many of these demands were “already agreed to by the US” in the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, signed between Iran and the US in June. The problem, Jackson explained, was not the content but the wording. “The difficulty was that the language then was quite broad,” he said, meaning the original agreement lacked specific details on how to implement the terms. This new list may therefore be an attempt to tighten those vague commitments into concrete steps. For now, the reopening of the key oil shipping route remains uncertain, pending further negotiations.
